THE APPLICATION OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING MODEL BASED ON THINK PAIR SHARE TYPE TO UPGRADE THE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL

This research is intended to investigate the effect of Think Pair Share teaching technique in teaching speaking to the tenth grade students of Senior High School (SMA Negeri 8) Banda Aceh. The main purpose was to know 1). Can Think Pair Share teaching technique be used to improve the students’ ability in speaking English?, 2). Can Think Pair Share teaching technique increase the students’ activities in the learning process? The population and sample of the study were the tenth year students of Senior High School (SMA Negeri 8) Banda Aceh which consists of 30 students. This study is a Classroom Action Research which consists of two cycles and each cycle includes Planning, Acting, Observing, Reflection, and Revision.. The data of this research were collected by giving a speaking test, and by using observation sheet. The data were analyzed using a simple statistical percentage formula. The result of the data analysis shows that the students’ achievement in the speaking test increase from cycle I to cycle II. In cycle I, 40% of the students reach the indicator, while in cycle II 83.87% reach the indicator. So, it can be concluded that the Think Pair Share technique can be used to improve the students’ speaking skill. As the follow up for this research, it is suggested that English teachers should use the Think Pair Share technique can be applied to improve the students’ speaking skill.
